3rd overall but 1st in the final race ending on a high

The first day in the Solent saw blue skies and a steady westerly with 10kts across the race course. In class 2 we were rated the highest in our handicap meaning we knew we should be leading the fleet and have time on top to gain places. First start was a peach, biased to the committee boat we gave a slight luff to 2 boats to windward and bore off for speed down the line, pulling away in the lead we opened enough of a gap to hold on and claim the first race. The second and third races of the day saw the wind blow up to 20kts with gusts over 25kts, starting pretty well we managed to stay ahead of the fleet but during the first downwind legs we encountered spinnaker issues and had to sail on with a late drop causing us to slip places. In the third race a late jib meant we were fighting to hold our spinnaker to the mark causing us to broach out just a few times! All good fun and lessons were learnt. Results after the first day were 1st, 6th and 5th placing us 4th overall in the class.

Day 2 we had 3 good races which saw us push to the front of the fleet, battling it out with the opposition 'Jack Black' and 'Chimp' which resulted in a 3rd and 4th place. In the last race we had improved our boat handling skills and opened up a good lead to finish on a high and in 1st position. Our improved results on the second day meant we climbed back up the leader board and onto the podium into 3rd place in class. We had fantastic weekend sailing on the RN's ultimate racing J109 class yacht 'Jolly Jack Tar', and the precedent has been set for the future of a Women's RN Sailing Team.
