Starcross Steamer

Culdrose Sailing Club - 23 Jan 13 Dinghies

10 Culdrose sailors defy the weather to attend the 1st event of 2013

Once again Culdrose Sailing Club marked the start of another sailing year with a trip to the Starcross Steamer. Getting there required a very early start in the freezing cold and a drive through snowy conditions across Bodmin and Dartmoor. Arriving at Starcross, the 10 intrepid sailors were pleasantly surprised to find an almost moderate breeze blowing down the Exe - which was more than forecast! This helped significantly as fingers were placed on the frozen foils and spars as the boats were rigged. Brief complete, and all boats on the fore-shore, we launched in turn - and set off in anticipation.......And then? Yep, the wind started to ease, and as our start times approached we wondered whether we could actually sail the course, with the lighter wind increasingly offset by an ever faster ebbing tide! Suffice to say, as the race progressed, Natalie and Amy got further ahead of our little fleet, and Ian and Nigel fell further behind (obviously not the conditions for us!) James and Kez, and Andy and Morgan filled in the middle - Well done Morgan for sailing as well as he did in some very trying conditions. Ultimately, only Nat and Amy stayed the course from the 2K's with the rest of us giving in to that damn tide!! Sam and Claire were pleased with their sail in the Merlin - but I can't say I saw them - think Nige and I were wallowing around or paddling in when they went past us!! However, all in all, a good day out, and great to see 5 boats from Cu. Well done to everyone for making the effort - and thanks to James and Kez for all the work in getting the 2K's ready this week.

It has been nice to see the following in the SYC report of the event: Special mention should be made of the efforts of the lads from RNAS Culdrose, who started their journey at a very early hour in Cornwall, trailing their 4 Laser 2000’s. They have loyally supported the Steamer for many years and we look forward to seeing them again next year.

We will be going back - and hopefully there will be some more RN sailors there too. It's a great event, and a good way to start working off that Christmas excess!!
