RNSA(P) Wednesday Spring Series race 6

Portsmouth - 02 May 19 Offshore

Ten yachts of the regular fleet of eleven mustered at Gilkicker for the sixth race of the Spring series. Fortunately the spasmodic rainfall had died away and a light southwesterly suggested that a decent race could be on despite the tide roaring towards Russia.

Moonfleet, an SOOD virgin handled the course setting and race management with aplomb. A beat against the tide to NE Ryde Middle, kite run to Browndown, gybe and broad reach home was the course solution which looked achievable if the breeze held up.
Spirit of Kudu hit the start line at pace in the first, slower grouping start and led the way up the first leg being chased hard by Crazy Horse and Danegeld. In the second start 5 minutes later Tinker T narrowly led off the line with Jolly Jack Tar and Option almost overlapped as they reached Darling Associates. Jolly Jack Tar however using her superior speed and power was soon ahead of the fast fleet and chasing hard after SOK on what turned out to be a half hour beat. At NE Ryde Middle it was SOK just ahead of JJT followed by Crazy Horse and Sunshine vying for inside rights at the mark. Although JJT with her huge asymmetric kite could not sail as low as the conventional spinnakers her pace (or should I be more PC and say its pace) was rapid and gybing down to the tidal gate at Browndown consolidated a large lead. And thus when the numbers were crunched in IRC it was JJT from SOK followed by TT and in NHC Moonfleet inspired by her race management triumph was first from Crazy Horse and SOK.
With 3 races to go in the Spring Series only 1.5 points separates the top four boats. All to play for.
