RNSA(P) Wednesday Spring Series race 9

Portsmouth - 23 May 19 Offshore

The slightly depleted fleet, missing 3 yachts, gathered at Gilkicker to decide who would top the podium for the Spring Series. In reality a crunch match between Jolly Jack Tar and Tinker T in the very competitive IRC fleet.

JJT as SOOD held the whip hand for the contest and set a course of a windward leg to Kemps Quay, a shy reach across to Browndown followed by a short run to Fairhall West and a kite reach home with the tide.
The first start saw Spirit of Kudu take a narrow lead over Crazy Horse as the fleet tacked onto starboard at Darling Associates, the effective ODM, to get away from the fast running east going tide off the point. These positions were maintained in the short sprint across the Solent.

In the second start Tinker T had the edge over Jolly Jack Tar and Sunshine but the superior speed of JJT had her edging ahead by the time Kemps Quay was reached. On the long drag back across the Solent to Browndown JJT was able to carry her Code Zero sail whilst the rest of the fleet had to make do with normal headsail, this paid dividends for JJT who proceeded to open a significant gap by the time the fleet arrived at Browndown. Her peel to her big asymmetric kite took a little time but not enough to offset the gains from the previous leg despite being chased hard by TT. So with line honours under their belt JJT had to wait for the elapsed times to be reported and the numbers crunched to see if they had done enough to take the series - they had!

So congratulations to JJT, let us hope that, that success is repeated in the SOR in a couple of weeks time. Full results for both classes in the Spring Series are at the link below.

Congratulations also to Wizard for topping the podium in the NHC class.
