RNSA(P) Wednesday Summer Series race 1

Portsmouth - 30 May 19 Offshore

The weather conditions that Race 1 of the Summer Series offered up were more akin to the final race of the Autumn Series, overcast with a hint of rain and a cool south westerly ranging between 11 and 19 knots. Full foul weather gear was the order of the day.

The conditions did not deter the fleet of eleven yachts which gathered at Gilkicker although four of the regulars were missing for a variety of reasons, however it was good to welcome back the J109 of the REYC and also a newcomer, the Prima 38 of Mark Brown.
With the tide running to the east the SOOD Tinker T set a windward - leeward course of a beat into the tide to Mother Bank, a run down to Gleeds and another beat to the finish. With the windward mark a tidal gate it looked like typical Solent 'big boat' conditions and thus it was.
The first start had Spirit of Kudu vying with Crazy Horse for the first boat to Darling Associates but thereafter SOK drew steadily ahead with all yachts keeping to the RHS up the beat. In the second start Trojan to leeward was just ahead of Tinker T but to windward Sunshine and Assassin had the pace to demand mark room at DA. Thereafter Assassin sailing high and fast drew clear. At the windward mark Assassin had a clear lead from Sunshine and Spirit of Kudu with the 2 J109's not far behind. On the long run down tide the ability of the standard kites to get lower than the asymmetric kites was very much apparent and Sunshine and Assassin steadily increased their lead. At the finish line it was the 2 faster yachts who finished well clear of the fleet with Spirit of Kudu doing well to hang onto third.
Alas we may soon be reduced by one boat as the Turn to Starboard team struggle with funding, anyone know of a friendly millionaire?
