RNSA(P) Dinghies - Woodcock Trophy Report

Portsmouth - 18 Jul 19 Dinghies

Racing in Portsmouth harbour

Fifteen sailors took to Portsmouth harbour to race for the Woodcock Trophy. This time the Hartley 15 was the weapon of choice with all 6 of the RNSA owned craft competing alongside one Bosun dinghy. The race committee was a real family affair with Ken and Beth Bichard on the committee boat and Lee Bichard providing safety cover. The boats competed in 4 races on an X shaped course with each one lasting 10-20 minutes. The wind was Westerly F2-3 so was usually enough to overcome the strong ebbing tide.

Competition was close throughout especially between Mike Ellison & Ian Parker in the Bosun, Claire Smith & Jim Newbury and Steve Jose & Andy Farr. Steve & Andy did eventually emerge victorious with 2 bullets but didn't have it all their own way. Claire & Jim took one victory while Matt Irwin & Chris Palucis sealed the win in the final race by the narrowest of margins in a 3 boat photo finish.

Overall results
1st Steve Jose & Andy Farr
2nd Claire Smith & Jim Newbury
3rd Mike Ellison & Ian Parker

Once ashore, Rear Commodore (Dinghies) Andy Wood awarded Steve & Andy their trophy and used the opportunity to sell RNSA's many benefits (racing opportunities, excellent value dinghy charter, interest free loans and the training camp in Lake Garda later this year). There is still time to do some Branch level racing in Portsmouth - dates below. Email to get involved.
