RNSA(P) Wednesday Autumn Series race 1

Portsmouth - 22 Aug 19 Offshore

A cracking sailing evening to start the Autumn Series with the gales and rain of Cowes Week a fast fading memory.

Despite perfect sailing conditions of sunshine and 9-11 knots of south westerly breeze only 6 yachts made the start line. Sunshine still wounded from Cowes Week, Jolly Jack Tar possibly suffering Summerleaveitis and wizard a little crewless were absent and we hope will join us later in the series.

The SOOD duties fell to Tinker T as the duty roster had not yet been compiled due to uncertainty of entrants, but with the reduced numbers it may be only one start is required and therefore all yachts could get a turn at starting procedures.

TT set a course of a beat to Mother Bank, a run to RN&RAYC and a short beat home. At the start gentle chaos reigned as the last of the west going tide sluiced those who were too eager over the line but with Tinker T involved with a noisy Happy Apple and having to do a 720 penalty the early starters were not recalled. Assassin led the charge up the beat closely followed by Happy Apple and bringing up the rear, Tinker T having taken her penalty and restarted. The left hand side of the beat appeared to pay with lifts on port tack as the Island shore got closer. TT took advantage of this and managed to slip past HA as the windward mark neared. A coaster running into North Channel opened the gap on Assassin a tad as the pursuing yachts altered to round its stern but the wind gusts from astern also helped keep the distance short enough to worry Assassin on handicap. The short beat back to the finish kept Assassin out in the now east going tide as the depth of water proved a challenge for her deep draught, but the tidal gate at Darling assisted the leading yacht and evened out the disadvantage. When the numbers were crunched Tinker T took the IRC win with Happy Apple triumphing in NHC.

The crews enjoyed a fine choice of supper back at HSSC presented and served by a nice smiley chef and her team. Many thanks.
