RNSA(P) Wednesday Autumn Series race 6

Portsmouth - 03 Oct 19 Offshore

The strong westerlies gusting to over 30 knots during the early afternoon were forecast to ease by the race start time of 1730. The SOOD, Sprit of Kudu, opted to make the call of whether to race or not at 1600. It was decided to race.

The earlier strong winds reduced the fleet to just 4 boats. The course was set for a beat to windward to Mother Bank, reaching back to Browndown with a final a run back home to Darling Associates and finish.

JJT, Kudu and Option decided to stay on the mainland side, beating just past Browndown before tacking for the first mark at Mother bank, Wizard tacked at Darling and headed straight for the easing tides and shelter of the island shore.

JJT rounded the mark at Mother bank first, followed 2 minutes later by Kudu. Wizard’s decision to tack at Darling and with Option sailing with a 2nd reef in the main and smaller head sail meant that they both arrived at the Mother bank within a few minutes of each other some 6 minutes or so after Kudu.

Gybing at Brown down saw all the spinnakers flying for the final run back to Darling and the finish line, the wind by this point in the evening had also dropped to a very sailable 15 knots.

The course set by the SOOD provided for an excellent race giving the ideal course of a beat, a reach and a run, all boats finished around the 1 hour mark and were safely back home before the evening drew in … Kudos to Kudu!
