J70 Development Weekend

Central - 25 Sep 17 General

The weekend of 16-17 Sep saw the second running of a combined sailing development weekend with the Royal Yacht Squadron.

Our Chairman/Vice Commodore led a 6 strong team and linked up with a similar sized Squadron group to undergo some intense and really fun training in J70s. The weekend included a mix of shore based instruction covering tactics and tuning, coach led exercises on the water, fleet racing and team racing. Excellent support was provided by the RYS in the form of a full race management team, umpires and coaches. Racing took place in four J70s and the conditions were ideal in the main, although the wind did drop away on the Saturday afternoon. The weekend was deliberately coincident with the Inter-Services Team Racing Championships, also held in Cowes (hosted by the Island Sailing Club) and this provided a great opportunity for the crews to exchange thoughts, ideas and experiences. Costs were minimised and the result was the identification of 2 new helms now ready challenge strongly for RNSA team places.
