Inter Service Keelboat Championships for the Coningham Cup: 16-17 Sep 17

RC (Dinghies) - 27 Sep 17 Dinghies

The RN team dominated the weekend's sailing to finish 1st and 2nd to become Inter Service Keelboat Champions and winners of the Coningham Cup!

Racing in Sonars from the Island Sailing Club and under their race management the three Services had a very enjoyable weekend of close racing challenging for the Coningham Cup.

4 races were achieved on the Saturday before the wind died ahead of a rather menacing thunderstorm. Hamish Walker crewed by Fiona Cook and Gavin Marshall quickly got the measure of their boat and knocked out 4 bullets in a row! James French with Coral Crouch and Katrina Juniper in the second RN boat were continually chasing and would have won a race until they ran aground just before the leeward mark and the race had to be abandoned.

A steadier breeze on the Sunday and some smart work by the Race Committee meant 6 races were completed - brilliant! Hamish and James vied for the lead in each race with spoils more evenly spread, James breaking his duck to tuck away a couple of firsts. The RAF and Army boats managed to compete a little more giving the RN boats something to think about but in the end the RN boats took first and second places by a fair margin.

The RNSA's new Commodore, Rear Admiral Chris Gardner CBE, witnessed the racing and presented the prizes.
