NL75. 75th Anniversary of Normandy Landings 6th June 1944

RC (Cruising) - 26 Aug 18 General

Every five years the annual commemorations step up a level. 2019 is expected to be no different. Preliminary planning is underway with assitance from Mike Morgan, RNVR YC and Gale Bryan RNSA East Coast Branch.

2019 marks the 75th Anniversary of the D Day landings on 6th June 1944 in Normandy. Every five years RNSA & RNVR YC members have gathered in Ouistreham. We intent to do so again in 2019. Few WW11 veterens will be in attendance but the French continue to mark the libération each year making a special effort every fifth year.

Wednesday 5th June Church service pm and personal reflections.

Thursday 6th June Skipper/crew option Pegasus bridge is walkable but Caen a bus ride

Friday 7th June Coach to Arromanches & Port-en-Bassan. Royal Marine Battle Honour capturing village intended as a terminal for pumping fuel from off shore tankers.

Saturday 8th June Queen’s Birthday. Attendees depart in accord with individual plans

There is no intention of organising a cruise across the channel. Each owner/skipper is responsible for their own craft. Branches may wish to coordinate like minded individuals starting from similar points.

Fuller details of the coach trip will be released in the new year. Seats will be limited so first come, first served. Planning on closely following the route Royal Marines took from Arromanches to Poet-en-Bassan, one hour in village and two to three hours in Arromanches including the museum.

If you are interested in joining us please make your cruising representative aware so they may act as a focal point for communication. Boat name, skipper, No on board, length, Breadth, Draft, likely UK departure point.

It is our intention to make the arrangements low key thus avoiding copious missives.

Terry Corner
Rear Commodore Cruising
